Sustainability

As a conservation biologist, I have worked with endangered and threatened species in remote areas of the world.

I care deeply about our planet and all of her inhabitants, so using supplies that are genuinely earth-friendly is my top priority.

I simply wouldn’t run this business if I wasn’t confident in the sustainability of each material I use. Read about each below.

  • Planters: From Italian, ‘terracotta’ translates to ‘baked-earth’. A porous clay that is found almost everywhere in the world, it has a low carbon footprint but requires kiln firing.

  • Sealant: UV-resistant, very low VOC sealant from a small business in California.

  • Shipping box: Curbside recyclable, made in USA from 100% recycled content (95% post-consumer waste diverted from landfills, 5% pre-consumer waste from manufacturer like scraps, rejects, trimmings)

  • Cushioning paper: Curbside recyclable, 100% post-consumer waste taken from my job at a nursery :)

  • Tape: Virgin kraft paper fiber with natural and synthetic rubber adhesive backing. Not recyclable, but does not inhibit the box from being recycled.

  • Shipping label: 100% recyclable paper labels on 100% post-consumer waste release liners that are curbside recyclable! Release liners are paper or plastic-based film sheets on things like band-aids and stickers. Traditional release liners usually end up in landfills by the billions, but not the ones I use!

  • Shipping: I ship with Sendle, a 100% carbon neutral shipper. After calculating the carbon footprint, Sendle invests in projects that prevent the release of carbon or remove it from the atmosphere.

I recognize that despite making sustainable choices, my business still impacts the earth.

“The environmental benefits of green products are not that they somehow fix the environment or have zero impact, but rather that their environmental impacts are less than those of similar products.” (Zink & Geyer, 2016)

I encourage you to be mindful consumers; choose to support business that consciously make efforts to reduce their impact when possible.
